Updated : Feb 26, 2026

The Kerala High Court has delivered a major blow to the makers of The Kerala Story 2: Goes Beyond by imposing an interim stay on its release. Originally scheduled to hit theaters tomorrow, February 27, 2026, the film is now barred from public viewing for at least 15 days.

Justice Bechu Kurian Thomas passed the order today following multiple petitions challenging the film's censor certification. The court observed that there appeared to be a "non-application of mind" by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) when granting the movie a U/A 16+ certificate.

A key point of contention was the film's title and its portrayal of the state. The court remarked that Kerala is known for its communal harmony and expressed concern that the film could distort public perception or incite passion. The bench noted that while freedom of expression is vital, content that has the potential to disturb law and order or social harmony does not fall under that protection.

The court has directed the CBFC to re-evaluate the film and consider the objections raised by petitioners within the next two weeks. Meanwhile, the producers have reportedly expressed their intention to challenge this stay before a larger bench of the High Court to avoid further delays in their theatrical plans.
